Halogen Lamps
Halogen lamps use a different kind of technology for making light when compared to the other kinds of lamps that are available on the market. The halogen lamp is most similar to the most familiar style of lamp today, the incandescent lamp. An incandescent bulb creates light by running current through a filament that is placed within a vacuum. Lamps with a halogen bulb also run current through a filament, burning it to produce light. However, halogen lamps are different in that the filament in a halogen lamp is contained within a close quartz enclosure and the filament is also surrounded by halogen gases. The close enclosure and the halogen gases make it so that some of the tungsten filament that burns off is actually reflected and redeposited on the filament again; as a result of this halogen lamps have a much longer period of use before the bulbs within halogen lamps run out.
However, there are downsides to all the halogen floor lamps, halogen table lamps and halogen desk lamps that are out there; the quartz envelope that is positioned so closely around the filament in halogen lamps gets extremely hot compared to the glass in a normal light bulb. If the enclosure around the filament in a halogen bulb were made of glass it would melt very quickly. Because a halogen desk lamp / halogen table lamp / halogen floor lamp etc. runs so hot, there are accident each year where a halogen lamp will be knocked over and a fire will be caused.
If you are operating an outdoor 500 watt halogen lamp or a gooseneck wall lamp with halogen bulbs inside, you will want to keep in mind the extreme heat of the halogen bulb and you may want to get a desk lamp 100w halogen bulb dimmer if you are going to be using halogen lamps up close and personal and for fine detailed work or writing. By running less power through the filaments of halogen lamps you can get them to run a little cooler and you can also use less power which decreases your lighting bill. While the benefits of halogen lamps to the environments as a result of their longer running are plain, be sure that you think carefully about the differences between halogen lamps, standard incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lamps when you are picking out the lamps and lighting sources to use for your desk or any area in your home.
